Masses atomiques

The nucleus is a mesoscopic system composed of neutrons and protons, which interact via the strong force. Each isotope is characterized by a unique set of excited states and by a ground state whose energy corresponds to the isotope’s mass. Understanding how this nuclear structure changes with neutron and proton number, deformation, spin and energy is one of the fundamental goals of nuclear physics.

The activity of the group has traditionally covered practically everything related to nuclear masses: from measurements to evaluation to theory. Development of ion trapping and cooling techniques has been and continues to be an important part of our activities. Another major activity is the Atomic Mass Evaluation, published periodically as a critical comparison and integration of mass data generated worldwide by all techniques. The group has recently expanded its activities to spectroscopy studies of exotic nuclei, notably the study of their nuclear moments and decay properties.
