Radiation tolerance and optical properties of fluorite-derived rare-earth-based oxides

Metal oxides with a fluorite-type structure, such as lanthanide sesquioxides (Ln2O3) pyrochlores (A2B2O7, where A is a rare earth and B a transition metal), are used or envisaged to be used in hostile, radiative nuclear environments. Study of their radiation stability is therefore of major importance. Moreover, some of these compounds can be considered as phosphors. It is thus interesting to investigate how irradiation can induce modifications of the photoluminescence properties.
